The challenge
Shule's first app assumed a constant connection and a modern phone. Most of their students had neither. Retention collapsed after week one and the store rating sat at 2.8.
What we built
A rebuild around offline-first architecture: content packs download once over WiFi, all quizzing works without a connection, and progress syncs when the phone next sees a network.
How we approached it
- 1Device audit across the actual handsets students were using
- 2Content packaged into downloadable subject bundles under 8MB each
- 3Local-first progress tracking with conflict-safe background sync
- 4Install size cut from 74MB to 22MB
- 5Staged rollout with crash monitoring on low-end device profiles
They tested on the phones our students actually own. That one decision turned the whole product around.

Commercial outcome
